Reception

Village in the Shade takes familiar farming mechanics and wraps them around a genuinely intriguing supernatural mystery, with villagers whose secrets are worth uncovering. The slow, restrictive opening tests your patience, but the story makes sticking around worthwhile.

Village in the Shade takes the good things about farming games and the Yomawari series and manages to fuse them into a frighteningly delightful whole. Granted, it takes a while to get rolling. But once it does, it can be hard to stop. It’s scary good. And make sure to upgrade your pickaxe. Seriously, you’ll thank me in the end. Now if you’ll excuse...

Village in the Shade is something rare in the landscape of farming sims: not a hybrid that resembles other games, but a fusion in which the tranquility of the day and the horror of the night amplify one another.

It’s not as solid a farming game as the faces of the genre, nor is it as good a horror game as Yomawari itself; but it’s in the small intersection between the two genres that it creates something capable of standing on its own as such a unique and memorable experience.

Nippon Ichi Software's farming sim debut is an instant classic
