2f:T2b6b,[{"ref":"steam:224857691","audience":"player","origin":"steam","author":"","url":"","language":"en","publishedAt":"2026-05-05T22:16:26.000Z","title":"","text":"The Faceless Ones, developed and published by Valkyria Games, is a traditional 2D role-playing game that embraces the structure and sensibilities of classic fantasy RPGs while attempting to deliver a large-scale narrative centered on a looming apocalyptic threat. Set within a kingdom overshadowed by the rise of a mysterious cult, the game follows a group of heroes brought together by circumstance as they attempt to prevent the resurrection of a powerful and destructive entity. It establishes a familiar foundation rooted in classic storytelling, where ancient evil, chosen champions, and a world in peril form the backbone of the experience.\nThe gameplay follows a party-based format, with players controlling multiple characters as they explore a semi-open world filled with towns, dungeons, and various points of interest. Movement across the world is straightforward, allowing players to progress through the story at a steady pace while taking on quests and encountering enemies along the way. The structure offers a moderate degree of freedom, letting players decide the order in which they approach certain objectives, but it remains guided enough to keep the narrative moving forward. This balance makes the game approachable, though it does not push far into open-ended design.\nCombat is turn-based and adheres closely to traditional RPG mechanics. Players select actions for each party member, manage resources, and respond to enemy behavior in a methodical manner. The system is easy to understand and accessible, especially for players familiar with older RPGs, but it does not introduce many new ideas. Battles tend to follow a predictable rhythm, and while they can be satisfying early on, they may begin to feel repetitive as the game progresses. The lack of significant mechanical evolution means that combat remains largely unchanged from beginning to end, relying on incremental upgrades rather than new systems to maintain interest.\nOne of the more notable aspects of the game is its scope. It presents a sizable amount of content, including multiple story arcs, side quests, and interconnected narrative elements that attempt to build a larger world. This ambition gives the game a sense of scale, but it also highlights some of its limitations. While there is plenty to do, much of it follows similar patterns, and the repetition of tasks can make the experience feel less varied over time. The world itself is functional and serviceable, but it does not always feel as dynamic or alive as its premise might suggest.\nNarratively, the game focuses on advancing its central conflict, using its cast of characters to explore the unfolding crisis. The inclusion of multiple protagonists provides different viewpoints, but character development remains relatively straightforward. Dialogue and story progression are clear and easy to follow, ensuring that players are never lost, but the writing rarely delves into deeper emotional or thematic territory. The story serves its purpose effectively, but it does not take significant risks or offer unexpected twists that might elevate it beyond its familiar structure.\nVisually, The Faceless Ones adopts a pixel-art style that reflects its retro inspirations. Character sprites and environments are detailed enough to convey the setting and support gameplay, while maintaining a consistent aesthetic throughout. The presentation is clean and readable, making it easy to navigate both exploration and combat. However, the visual design does not vary dramatically across different areas, and while it is pleasant to look at, it does not leave a particularly strong or lasting impression.\nThe pacing of the game is steady, allowing players to progress through its content without feeling rushed. Features like autosaving and simple controls contribute to a smooth experience, reducing friction and making it easy to continue playing in short or extended sessions. However, the consistency of the pacing also means that the game rarely introduces moments of surprise or significant change, which can make longer play sessions feel somewhat monotonous.\nReplayability is limited by the game’s largely linear structure. While there are side quests and optional content, the overall experience does not change significantly on subsequent playthroughs. The Faceless Ones, developed and published by Valkyria Games, is a traditional 2D role-playing game that embraces the structure and sensibilities of classic fantasy RPGs while attempting to deliver a large-scale narrative centered on a looming apocalyptic threat. Set within a kingdom overshadowed by the rise of a mysterious cult, the game follows a group of heroes brought together by circumstance as they attempt to prevent the resurrection of a powerful and destructive entity. It establishes a familiar foundation rooted in classic storytelling, where ancient evil, chosen champions, and a world in peril form the backbone of the experience.

The gameplay follows a party-based format, with players controlling multiple characters as they explore a semi-open world filled with towns, dungeons, and various points of interest. This balance makes the game approachable, though it does not push far into open-ended design.

Combat is turn-based and adheres closely to traditional RPG mechanics. The lack of significant mechanical evolution means that combat remains largely unchanged from beginning to end, relying on incremental upgrades rather than new systems to maintain interest.

One of the more notable aspects of the game is its scope. The world itself is functional and serviceable, but it does not always feel as dynamic or alive as its premise might suggest.

Narratively, the game focuses on advancing its central conflict, using its cast of characters to explore the unfolding crisis. The inclusion of multiple protagonists provides different viewpoints, but character development remains relatively straightforward. Dialogue and story progression are clear and easy to follow, ensuring that players are never lost, but the writing rarely delves into deeper emotional or thematic territory. The story serves its purpose effectively, but it does not take significant risks or offer unexpected twists that might elevate it beyond its familiar structure.

Visually, The Faceless Ones adopts a pixel-art style that reflects its retro inspirations. Character sprites and environments are detailed enough to convey the setting and support gameplay, while maintaining a consistent aesthetic throughout. The presentation is clean and readable, making it easy to navigate both exploration and combat. However, the visual design does not vary dramatically across different areas, and while it is pleasant to look at, it does not leave a particularly strong or lasting impression.

The pacing of the game is steady, allowing players to progress through its content without feeling rushed. Features like autosaving and simple controls contribute to a smooth experience, reducing friction and making it easy to continue playing in short or extended sessions. However, the consistency of the pacing also means that the game rarely introduces moments of surprise or significant change, which can make longer play sessions feel somewhat monotonous.

Replayability is limited by the game’s largely linear structure. While there are side quests and optional content, the overall experience does not change significantly on subsequent playthroughs. Most of the value comes from completing the story and exploring the available content rather than revisiting the game for different outcomes or strategies.

Despite its shortcomings, The Faceless Ones succeeds in delivering a cohesive and content-rich RPG experience that stays true to its classic roots. It offers a familiar and accessible journey that fans of traditional role-playing games may find enjoyable, particularly those who appreciate a straightforward approach to storytelling and mechanics. Its ambition is evident in the amount of content it provides, even if that ambition is not always fully realized in execution.

In the end, The Faceless Ones is a solid but conventional RPG that prioritizes quantity and consistency over innovation. It provides a lengthy and structured adventure that can be engaging for players who enjoy classic systems, but it is held back by repetition and a lack of deeper mechanical variety. It stands as a respectable entry within its niche, offering a dependable experience without significantly pushing the genre forward.
