The controls take some getting used to and you can't actually modify them.
It would take the game a lot further if you could enable a checkbox or two to change the controls.
For example, the camera only changes with your movement direction if you're not shooting, I'd prefer it to always do so.
Alternatively an option to not change the camera and just...
