Populous: The Beginning is a strategy and god-style video game. It is the third entry in the Populous video game series, developed by Bullfrog Productions in 1998. The PC version of the game was released November 30, 1998 and a PlayStation version was later developed and released on April 2, 1999.
Unlike earlier games in the series, which cast the player in the role of a god influencing loyal followers, The Beginning took a radical departure and placed the player in the role of a shaman, who directly leads her tribe against opponents. I just hopped on this with a cold one in my hand after a hard week of work. I used to play this on the PS1 and launch massive, 800-soldier assaults on enemy shamans. The music, the vibe... man, this takes me back. It almost makes me shed a tear. Great times and what a great game. Cheers, lads.
Game still broken, either will black screen while launching the game, or the main menu will freeze up and force you to force quit the game. On Windows 11, no DLL fixes work, no version in compatibility mode works, and not even dgvoodoo can get the game to work (like a lot of other older games). Insane that I could get the game working on the original...
one of the greatest rts of all time...
game works no issues on a 4k tv full screened with the 1600x900 res, does have some glitches to the textures etc but it cant be helped on moderns screens, there is 4k mods out there if you can be bothered.
The game is completely unplayable out the box from steam unless you do hours of research work just to launch a game from the 90's. Laggy unresponsive and bound to freeze just seconds of being on the main menu.
