"Hive Jump is one part Spelunky, one part XCOM, and all parts alien ass-kicking. You and your friends assume the role of JUMPERS, and blast your way through subterranean alien hives in run-and-gun 2D platforming action. Kill aliens, avoid traps, collect resources, and defeat the hive queen lurking at the bottom of the hive to complete the JUMP."
Overall, Hive Jump is a great time, with well-thought-out level and enemy design, smooth gameplay, and a brilliant upgrade system. It’s certainly better placed as a party game with several mates playing local on the sofa, but it’s good fun regardless.
Hive Jump is what XCOM would have become if developers abandoned turn-based combat and bet on action. Here we have a mix of turn-based tactical strategy on regional level and then we jump into the hive to slay aliens.
I think for those loving the retro-inspired genre Hive Jump is worth having. It’s not the type of title that will shatter expectations but it’s a solid release from Graphite Lab.
Very average rogue-like
In the end, the overall difficulty of the game makes Hive Jump a hard game to recommend. Players looking for a one player run-and-gun game should look to other titles. If you like difficult multiplayer games, this might be the game you are looking for.
