"99Vidas" is a "beat 'em up" set in a contemporary world that pays tribute to both the new and the classic in gaming industry. Brought to you in all pixelated, 16 bit-esque glory, chockfull of references to not only gaming, but all 80's and 90's pop culture.
99Vidas is set in a fictional anachronic universe, inspired by video games and the pop culture of the 1980s and 1990s. The game begins when an artifact known as 99Vidas goes missing. This artifact is believed to hold such great power it could bring darkness and chaos to our very existence, should it ever fall into the hands of those with evil intents.
As the Guardians of the 99Vidas, granted the Power of the Elements, bound to live through the ages to protect the artifact, it is your responsibility to face the forces of evil, defeat the Evil Boss and his six henchmen, and retrieve the 99Vidas.
99Vidas is rather competent at the old-school beat'em up genre and has a good art style and soundtrack to match. On the experience level, however, there are frustrating elements which are particularly noticeable on single player and which end up making 99Vidas a more lacklustre experience compared to some of its peers.
Not hugely unique but definitely engaging, 99 Vidas is an excellent tribute to side-scrollers, brawlers and some of the past three decades' standout games.
99 Lives is a "me against the neighborhood" with which anyone can travel to the times when the genre lived a golden age and enjoy a title with a lot of content and a lot of fun to play, both alone and with others.
While 99Vidas puts some effort into the proceedings it’s also trapped in being a bit too ordinary among multiple titles that manage to be more ambitious and deliver more of a value-added experience. With some friends it would make a great game for everyone to enjoy for a playthrough or two but in particular as a solo experience it’s impossible to ignore...
Although being a bit repetitive, 99Vidas is a fun release that will play the nostalgia angle to charm gamers. Beat 'em ups, by nature, feature repetitive gameplay, but 99Vidas does a good job at keeping things fun while paying homage to some of the classics in the genre. If you're a fan of beat 'em ups, then you should check this one out from – especially...
