Reception

Super Smash Bros. for Wii U holds these two opposite impulses — the creative and destructive — together for a few moments. While it's impossible for that union to endure, there is some magic in seeing the worlds overlap for a few moments, swollen to the point of bursting, with the kind of make-believe that one forgets about in adult life but never really...

Offering tons of iconic fighters, satisfying game modes and gorgeous visuals, Super Smash Bros. for Wii U is the best installment yet in Nintendo's flagship fighting franchise.

‎It's everything we expected and more. Whether it's played by one person or eight, its magnificent gameplay and extensive content are a guarantee of hundreds (or thousands) of hours of fun. The biggest must-have on Wii U.‎

Super Smash Bros. is technically formidable, extremely imaginative, and always a step or two beyond common sense: an open-stage applause show.

The result is almost certainly the definitive version of Smash. Not all of it works, but plenty does, leaving us with a fine solo game and a wonderfully, wilfully chaotic multiplayer brawler. Smash is still too unrefined to be the choice of the Nintendo connoisseur, perhaps, but as long as you don't take it too seriously, it is riotously good fun.
